Transformational Acupuncture
The Eight Extraordinary Vessels
Transformational acupuncture combines the mental-emotional benefits of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians with Somatic Medical Qigong and Mindfulness. This integrated approach helps gently release emotional blocks and old beliefs that formed in childhood which no longer serve us. Often, our minds and bodies suppress emotions to keep us safe, but in doing so, we lose touch with parts of ourselves. True healing comes when the body’s wisdom can be accessed and these hidden or vulnerable parts can finally be seen, heard, and accepted.
With over 20 years practising Acupuncture and Somatic Medical Qigong and 15 years as a teacher of Mindfulness, I have developed an therapeutic way of working that combines these methods while using the Eight Extraordinary Meridians to access deeper layers of the self.
The Chinese term for these channels is Qi Jing Ba Mai, meaning “extraordinary vessels.” They are the deepest energetic pathways in the body, often described as our original blueprint – the part of us that has never been damaged. Working with these channels can help us reconnect with our core self, clear old emotional blockages, and realign with our true values and life purpose.

A Blueprint of Authenticity
Many people experience anxiety, low mood, or a sense of emptiness when they lose touch with who they really are. Over time, external pressures – from family, society, or work – can cause us to move away from our authentic self. The extraordinary meridians help to gently bring us back to that place of inner truth and confidence, so we can live with greater clarity, meaning, and ease.
Let’s Delve Into the Meridians
The Chong Mai
This is the first channel to form at conception, representing our core identity, spiritual DNA and life path. It holds the story of who we are meant to become. Balancing this meridian helps us feel more grounded in self-acceptance, self-worth, and purpose.
The Ren Mai and Du Mai
The Ren (Conception Vessel) and Du (Governing Vessel) form the central Yin–Yang circuit of energy in the body. The Ren relates to the feminine aspect, qualities such as nurturing, bonding, and self-compassion, while the Du is the masculine aspect which supports strength, purpose, and healthy independence, this is the balance of Yin and Yang.
Yin Wei and Yang Wei
These meridians help us make sense of the past so we can live more fully in the present. They integrate our life experiences, supporting emotional balance, insight, and the ability to move forward with gratitude and awareness
Yin Qiao and Yang Qiao
These channels relate to how we “stand” in life. When balanced, they strengthen self-assurance and boundaries, helping us meet the world with confidence and resilience.
Dai Mai
This vessel encircles the body like a belt, helping us release repressed emotions and create healthy psychological boundaries. It supports letting go of the past and stepping into self-acceptance and wholeness.
In the first treatment, I explore which of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians is most relevant for you at this point in your life. We begin with a short mindfulness practice to help your body and mind settle. Then, as the acupuncture needles gently activate one or two of the meridians, I’ll guide you through a somatic Qigong awareness exercise — inviting you to tune into your inner energy and notice where your body may be ready to release stored emotion or tension.
The Eight Extraordinary Meridians offer deep pathways to healing, transformation, and self-understanding. By working through these energetic systems, you can begin to release what no longer serves you, reconnect with your true self, and live with a greater sense of balance, purpose, and authenticity.
